KlimaKover
The Thermal Architecture Lab is proud to introduce KlimaKover, a groundbreaking pavilion that demonstrates low-energy radiant cooling as an alternative to conventional air-conditioning in outdoor environments. Installed on Governors Island, New York City, the project redefines how architecture can actively cool the human body while remaining fully open-air, quiet, and condensation-free.
Developed in collaboration with Henning Larsen and AIL Research, KlimaKover combines membrane-assisted radiant panels, solar power, and natural ventilation to create a comfortable microclimate under extreme heat and humidity. Its modular 4-by-4-foot timber units can be assembled, disassembled, and redeployed across various urban contexts—from parks and schoolyards to transit stops and public plazas.
Unlike conventional air-conditioning, the system cools by drawing radiant heat directly from the body rather than by chilling the air. The photonic membrane around the panels prevents condensation and enables efficient operation even in humid climates. Compared to traditional cooling systems, KlimaKover consumes up to ten times less energy and requires no external water supply, offering a scalable solution for sustainable and equitable urban cooling.
Beyond a technological prototype, KlimaKover serves as a public education platform on Governors Island, inviting visitors to experience and learn about radiant cooling firsthand. Environmental data collected from the pavilion informs ongoing research on climate resilience and community-centered design.
